Behavior Guidelines

It’s important to understand that during your time of study at JUC, you will be a guest in traditional Middle Eastern (Christian and Muslim) and Orthodox Jewish societies that have deeply engrained patterns of socially-acceptable behavior. Students are expected to behave with Christian morality and maturity, aided by the following behavior guidelines:

  • Any and all forms of sexual harassment are strictly forbidden. See JUC's Sexual Harassment Policy.
  • JUC students are not allowed to date any local resident.
  • The use of all illegal drugs is forbidden whether on or off campus.
  • Public displays of affection, including handholding, are not appropriate for dating, engaged, or married couples in many places in Jerusalem, or in many places that you will visit on field studies. Even though times are changing in larger cities, Western-style dating is still generally unacceptable in Orthodox Jewish and Muslim society.
  • Drinking alcoholic beverages is not permitted on campus or in any residence halls. This policy also applies to all students and JUC personnel on all official field study activities and in all places where a JUC group stays on field studies.
  • Jerusalem University College, including its residence halls and outdoor areas, is a smoke-free campus. Smoking in all of its forms, including the nargila or hookah, and chewing tobacco is not permitted on campus.
  • All forms of plagiarism are forbidden.

In addition to the above policies, students from other schools are expected to abide by the regulations of their home institution while enrolled as a student at JUC. The policies set by JUC are created in recognition of the fact that we have Christians from a variety of traditions and perspectives in our programs, particularly relating to the use of tobacco and alcohol. We seek to be sensitive to this variety of perspectives and to be a witness in the local community. Any flagrant, repeated, and/or recalcitrant violation of JUC’s behavior guidelines may result in expulsion.
