Digital Theological Library 2 (DTL2)
DTL2 provides access to over a million books, hundreds of academic journals, and databases, including Biblical Archaeology Review, Middle Eastern Studies, BASOR, ASOR, Near Eastern Archaeology, Journal of Palestine Studies, and more. JUC will provide a password for library access to Long-Term or Online students who are enrolled in at least one course for credit.

Association of Christian Librarians (ACL) Reciprocal Borrowing Program
The ACL Reciprocal Borrowing Program allows JUC students taking at least one class for credit (in-residence and online) to have library borrowing privileges at other ACL participating institutions. Students must obtain a signed Authorization Form from JUC to submit to a participating library for in-person use of their resources.

Open Access Text Resources
- This series focuses on the ancient Near East, including ancient Israel and its literature, from the early Neolithic to the early Hellenistic eras. These resources are suited for philological and archaeological studies.
Ancient World Digital Library (AWDL)
- The AWDL is a digital library of public domain content on the ancient world, created by the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW) at New York University. AWDL provides digital access to over 400 volumes across subjects such as Egyptology, Assyriology, Papyrology, and Classical Antiquity. Visit the Collections Overview page for a list of subjects.
- This website, published by the Society of Biblical Literature, offers critical essays on the study of the Bible in an encyclopedic format. Leading scholars on the Bible contribute essays that explore historical and literary research on key people, places, and passages of the Bible.
Catalogue of the Ecole Biblique et Archeologuque Francaise Library in Jerusalem
- This catalogue offers more than 150,000 volumes and 400 specialized periodicals, with the majority focusing on biblical exegesis, the archaeology and literature of the Near East, and ancient languages.
The Center for Study of New Testament Manuscripts (CSNTM)
- The CSNTM, under the umbrella of The Center for the Research of Early Christian Documents (CRECD), provides digital photographs of extant Greek New Testament manuscripts so that such images can be preserved, duplicated without deterioration, and accessed by scholars doing textual research.
- Encyclopædia Iranica is a comprehensive research tool dedicated to the study of Iranian civilization in the Middle East, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Indian subcontinent.
- Browse a wide array of books on Google Books. Public domain books are available in full text, while other books may have excerpts available.
- JSTOR offers scholarly journal articles, books, and primary sources in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Personal registration is required.
Library of Congress Digital Collections
- The Library of Congress has made digitized versions of collection materials available online since 1994, concentrating on its most rare collections and those unavailable elsewhere. The Digital Collections contain a growing treasury of digitized photographs, manuscripts, maps, sound recordings, motion pictures, books, and websites. In addition, the Library maintains and promotes the use of digital library standards and provides online research and reference services.
Library of Congress World Digital Library
- This collection contains cultural heritage materials gathered during the World Digital Library project, including thousands of items contributed by partner organizations worldwide as well as content from Library of Congress collections. Books, manuscripts, maps, and other primary materials are presented in their original languages.
Open Access Digital Theological Library (OADTL)
- The OADTL curates content in religious studies and related disciplines from publisher websites, institutional repositories, scholarly societies, archives, and stable public domain collections.
- Pew Research Center provides data-driven research materials and offers content covering a wide range of topics including politics and policy; news habits and media; the internet and technology; religion; race and ethnicity; international affairs; social, demographic and economic trends; science; research methodology and data science; and immigration and migration.
- Sefaria is a free living library of Jewish texts, translations, and commentaries. Resource Topics Include: Tanakh, Mishnah, Talmud, Midrash, Halakhah, Kabbalah, Liturgy, Philosophy, Tanaitic, Chasidut, Musar, Responsa, Apocrypha, Modern Works.
Semantics of Ancient Hebrew Database
- The Semantics of Ancient Hebrew Database aims to provide a structured and critical survey of scholarly literature on the vocabulary of classical Hebrew. As it grows, it will offer an in-depth resource to complement traditional dictionaries and provide pointers to further research. This international, cooperative project involves a growing number of research centres with coordination provided by Amsterdam.
- The UNESCO Digital Library is a repository of more than 350,000 documents dating back to 1945 on topics in education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and communication and information.
- The Theological Commons of Princeton Theological Seminary is a freely accessible digital library of over 160,000 resources on theology and religion, including books, journals, audio recordings, photographs, manuscripts, and other formats.
- The World Bank provides free and open access to statistical data on global development.
Open Access Maps
- Maps include SWPs maps and Israeli hiking maps. This is a useful resource for finding locations using either the New or Old Israeli Grid (e.g., locations in NEAHAL, Anchor Bible Dictionary, old surveys, etc.) It is recommended to turn on Google Translate and disable the user-added data.
- Biblical Archaeology.org.uk offers public domain works and high resolution maps. One of the most useful is George Adam Smith's Jerusalem volumes, which includes high-resolution scans.
- The David Rumsey Map Collection hosts thousands of maps in high resolution, many of which are downloadable. This is a good resource for maps outside of Israel, such as maps of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Arabia, etc.
The Eran Laor Cartographic Collection
- The Eran Laor Cartographic Collection is at the National Library of Israel, and the full collection is also available online. Included are the maps of Edward Robinson (drawn by Kiepert) that accompanied Biblical Researches in Palestine 1838/1856.
- Gallica is the digital library of the National Library of France (and its partners) which includes a number of very important maps in high resolution.
- GOVMAP.gov.il provides satellite imagery of sites within Israel, along with other built-in maps. It is recommended to use the bottom left corner to change the maps to satellite views and use Google Translate.
Israel Antiquities Authority - The Archaeological Survey of Israel
- This database is one of the most useful resources for the historical geography of Israel, as it provides the full publication of the Survey of Israel in digital format. The maps are laid out in 10kmx10km grids. If an English translation is not available, (the Beersheba maps) you may need to use the Hebrew version.
Israel Antiquities Authority - Hadashot Arkhaeologiyot
- Hadashot Arkhaeologiyot contains online publications from excavations and surveys in Israel. It is recommended to search using archaeological periodization (e.g., "Late Bronze").
Israel's 1:200,100 Geological Map
- A useful citation for geology, the 1:200,100 Geological Map was published in 1997-1998 (as hard copy) and reprinted in 2014. This is a downloadable resource.
- Explore, search and download historical maps and spatial data on Palestine from the 1870s to 1950s. This resource allows for split-screen map comparisons, 3D viewing mode, and overlays. It is recommended to use the "combined maps, 1930s/40s" (for example) setting to view in the highest resolution.
Open Access Digital Images
Matson (G. Eric and Edith) Photograph Collection
- The G. Eric and Edith Matson Photograph Collection contains historical images of the Middle East. Most of the collection consists of over 22,000 glass and film photographic negatives and transparencies created by the American Colony Photo Department and its successor, the Matson Photo Service. Over 1,000 photographic prints and eleven albums are also part of this collection.
Penn Libraries Holy Land Digital Image Collections
- Penn Libraries collections include primary sources such as rare manuscripts, early modern printed books, travelogues, early photographs and printed postcards, engraved and hand-illustrated maps and atlases, original archeological artifacts, field reports, and extensive circulating secondary sources. The Lenkin Collection of Photography consists of over 5,000 early photographs of the Holy Land, dating from 1850-1937.
- Princeton University's archaeological archives consist of unique photographic and textual documentation generated by over 100 years of expeditions and excavations conducted and sponsored by Princeton University.
- The Smithsonian Open Access includes a growing number of 4.5 million images and data from across the their 21 museums, nine research centers, libraries, archives, and the National Zoo.
