Semester normally offered:
A survey of key pieces of literature from ancient Israel’s neighbors, including Egypt, Mesopotamia, Syria, and others. The goal is to place biblical literature within its historical context, noting both points of similarity and contrast and highlighting both parallels and the uniqueness of the biblical text. This course is offered asynchronously.

By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
summarize the basic religious and cultural ideas of the biblical world;
overview and identify key details related to distinct genres in the Ancient Near East (ANE) corpus;
articulate key connection points between biblical literature and ANE literature; and
explain foundational distinctives between biblical literature, life, and culture and their ANE counterparts.
